How to choose the right fork for your tractor
The choice depends on what you need to lift, the weight of the load and the tractor's hitch.
1. Pallet fork or bale spear
A pallet fork has two flat tines that slide under pallets. A bale spear has tapered spikes that go into round or square hay bales: two spikes for the most common loads, three for a steadier grip.
2. Capacity and power
Pallet forks lift 300 kg on 12 to 45 hp tractors and up to 700 kg on 25 to 90 hp tractors. Bale spears carry 600 to 800 kg, for tractors from 12 up to 100 hp. Check that the lift can carry the weight of the fork plus the load.
3. Three-point hitch or front loader
Most forks mount on the three-point hitch: category 1 on the lighter models and category 1 and 2 on the sturdier ones. The Euro attachment fork fits the front loader and lifts pallets higher, with the load always in view.
4. Safety
Never stand under a raised load, carry pallets and bales low and use front ballast when lifting heavy loads at the rear. On some bale spears the spikes fold away for safe travel when not in use.
| Type | Capacity | Tractor power | Connection | Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light pallet fork | 300 kg | 12–45 hp | Three-point cat. 1 | Pallets, compact tractors |
| Heavy-duty pallet fork | 700 kg | 25–90 hp | Three-point cat. 1-2 | Heavy pallets |
| Front loader pallet fork | 700 kg | 25–90 hp | Euro attachment | Pallets, high lifting |
| Bale spear | 600–800 kg | 12–100 hp | Three-point cat. 1-2 | Round or square hay bales |
What capacity does the fork have?
Pallet forks lift 300 or 700 kg and bale spears 600 to 800 kg, depending on the model. The real limit also depends on the tractor's lift, which must carry the weight of the fork plus the load.
Is the fork compatible with my tractor?
Yes, if the farm tractor has the power stated for the model and the three-point hitch of the required category, or a front loader with Euro attachment for the dedicated fork. Also check the distance between the lower lift arms on the product page.
Three-point or front loader fork?
The three-point fork mounts at the rear and is the simplest, most affordable solution. The front loader fork lifts higher, for example to load a truck, and keeps the load in sight.
How many spikes do I need for hay bales?
Two spikes are enough for most bales; three give more stability and spread the weight better. Choose the spike length according to the size of your bales.
Can they be used with tracked or orchard tractors?
Many forks also fit tracked, articulated and orchard tractors with a three-point hitch. Check compatibility on the product page.
