Electric wheelbarrow: what to consider before buying
With an electric wheelbarrow, running costs come down to a few cents of electricity, maintenance is minimal and you can work anywhere, even indoors. To choose well, the key factors are battery type, real autonomy, load capacity and place of work.
1. Lead-acid or lithium battery
- Lead-acid: lower purchase price and suitable for regular use with full recharges. It must always be stored fully charged.
- Lithium: more autonomy, faster charging and lower weight; it tolerates partial charging and lasts longer in charge cycles.
2. Real autonomy and charging
The stated autonomy ranges from 8 to 12 hours depending on the battery, enough for a standard working day. Heavy loads, frequent climbs and soft ground reduce it. Charging usually takes 6 to 8 hours from a 220V household socket: the most practical solution is to charge overnight.
3. Removable battery
On models with a removable battery, it can be taken out to charge it away from the machine or to replace it at the end of its life. For long shifts, a second charged battery can be kept as a spare.
4. Load capacity, body and tipping
The rated load starts at 400 kg, with steel bodies from about 0.22 m³. Tipping can be:
- electric, with a linear actuator: simple, oil-free and with minimal maintenance;
- hydraulic, with an electro-hydraulic pump: more lifting force and speed, suitable for heavier loads.
On models with rear swivel wheels, the wheels must be locked in the straight position with loads over 100 kg to prevent skidding.
5. Where electric makes sense
- Greenhouses, stables, warehouses and indoor building sites, where exhaust fumes are not allowed
- Residential complexes, apartment blocks, parks and historic centres, where noise matters
- Grounds maintenance work that starts early in the morning
- Companies that want to cut fuel and maintenance costs
6. Safety on slopes
Slope limits change with the load: the fuller the body, the lower they are. The values for each load range are given in the documentation of each product (operating manual or slope table by load). Always travel in a straight line, without turning or stopping across the slope, and never stand between the machine and the downhill side.
| Lead-acid battery | Lithium battery | |
|---|---|---|
| Stated autonomy | 8–10 hours | 10–12 hours |
| Charging time | about 8 hours (from 20%) | about 6 hours |
| Machine weight | higher | lower |
| Partial charging | best avoided, full cycles preferred | tolerated |
| Storage | always fully charged, full recharge at least every 3 months | at about half charge, in a dry place |
| Price | lower | higher, but more life cycles |
How much does it cost to charge an electric wheelbarrow?
A full charge uses about 1.5 kWh. At a rate of €0.30/kWh it costs less than 50 cents, so a working day costs far less than a tank of fuel.
Can it be charged from a normal household socket?
Yes: all you need is a 220V household socket and the supplied charger. Always charge in a dry, ventilated place, protected from rain and humidity.
How should the battery be stored in winter or during periods of inactivity?
It depends on the type. A lead-acid battery must be stored fully charged and fully recharged at least every three months, because it deteriorates if left discharged. A lithium battery, on the other hand, is stored at about half charge, in a dry place at a moderate temperature. Precise instructions are given in the operating manual.
How many years does the battery last?
It depends on the number of charge cycles and how it is treated. Lithium generally offers many more cycles than lead-acid. Avoiding deep discharges and following the storage instructions greatly extends battery life.
Can an electric wheelbarrow be washed?
Yes, but do not use a pressure washer on the electrical parts, the battery and the connectors: high-pressure water can damage them. Clean with a damp cloth or low-pressure water and let it dry before charging.
What is the electromagnetic brake for?
It engages when you release the drive control and holds the machine still, even on gently sloping ground. It is an important safety feature when you stop to load or unload.
Why do the rear swivel wheels need to be locked?
On models that have them, swivel wheels make the machine very manoeuvrable when empty. With loads over 100 kg, however, they can cause the machine to skid, so they must be locked in the straight position before setting off.
How much material does the body hold?
It depends on the model: bodies start at about 0.22 m³. With wet soil, which weighs around 1,600–1,800 kg per cubic metre, a full body quickly approaches the rated load. With light materials such as leaves and brushwood, the limit becomes the volume instead.
Is electric or hydraulic tipping better?
Electric tipping, with a linear actuator, is simple and almost maintenance-free: ideal for gardening and medium-sized jobs. Hydraulic tipping lifts with more force and speed, and is the choice for heavy loads and frequent work cycles, such as on building sites.
How fast does an electric wheelbarrow go?
At walking pace: around 5 km/h forward and slower in reverse, for safe manoeuvring in tight spaces.
What maintenance does it need?
Very little compared with a petrol model: there is no engine oil, filters or spark plugs. Just check the tyre pressure, the condition of the battery cables and terminals and the brake operation, following the operating manual.
